Q: Does ZEVO work with Developer Preview versions of Mac OSX?

We currently don’t support using ZEVO with developer preview versions of Mac OSX (like Mountain Lion 10.8 DP1). We will be testing with these developer versions in our ZEVO beta test program.

Q: If I purchase ZEVO Silver, can I upgrade to other ZEVO editions?

Yes! You may purchase Silver Edition and then when Gold, Platinum, or Developer Editions are released, you only need to pay the price difference to upgrade.

Q: Can I buy your products through the Apple App Store?

Unfortunately, no. Currently the Apple App Store does not support products like file systems, system extensions, disk drivers, etc.

Q: How is ZEVO licensed?

Our products are licensed as a Single-User License for personal use (non-commercial). You may buy one license and install it on up to 5 of your personal computers (computers you own and control).
For commercial/institutional use: One license per computer. Please note: The Developer Edition is intended for non-commercial, personal use only.
Refer to the End-User License Agreement (EULA) for complete details of our license.

Q: Do you offer product support?

We offer product support through our online resources which include knowledge-based articles, community forums, and bug reporting.

Q: Do I need to reformat my drive to use ZEVO?

Yes, ZEVO requires an initialization step that will prepare the drive for use with ZEVO. The previous contents of the drive (if any) will be erased during initialization.

Q: Can I share HFS+ and ZFS on the same disk?

The Silver Edition does not support sharing a single HDD disk with another file system. In the Silver Edition, ZEVO requires exclusive access to the disk. In most cases you will need to use ZEVO with an external disk.

Q: Can I backup ZEVO using TimeMachine?

Unfortunately it appears that TimeMachine can only backup from HFS+ but not from ZEVO (i.e. the source disk must be HFS+). Time Machine can only be used as a destination when used with ZEVO volumes.

Q: Is command line access available in the non-developer editions?

The traditional zfs and zpool commands are present in all editions. In most cases, it will be easier to use the GUI counterparts, but we understand that some users are already familiar with the command line interface. The availability of specific zfs subcommands will vary across the editions, but common operations like list, get and set properties will always be available.

Q: Can I boot from a ZEVO volume?

Booting Mac OS X from a ZEVO volume is currently not supported.

Q: Can ZEVO import ZFS disks from other platforms?

The initial versions of ZEVO use standard ZFS on disk (ver 28), however they don’t yet support importing pools from other platforms (e.g. FreeBSD, Linux , Solaris or Ilumos based implementations).

Q: Does ZEVO support encryption or work with FileVault 2?

The current versions of ZEVO do not support data encryption.

Q: Is a reformat required when upgrading editions?

All editions use a standard on-disk ZFS format. So if you move up to another edition, you will not have to reformat your data to use it.

To take advantage of data redundancy, you can upgrade a single disk configuration to a dual disk mirror by supplying a similarly sized drive. We are working on allowing a single disk ZFS configuration to seed a multi-disk RAID-Z, but we don’t yet have an ETA for that feature.

Q: Does ZEVO work with drobo devices?

ZEVO does not support drobo devices. Drobo recommends using HFS+ or NTFS on their products.

Q: Can I upgrade a disk with an older version of ZFS?

The Silver Edition does not yet support upgrading a zfs storage pool from a prior version of ZFS.

Q: Do you offer a free version of ZEVO?

Ten's Complement does not offer a free version of ZFS. However, there are several free options for you if that is a better fit. The MacZFS Community, OpenIndiana and FreeBSD 9.0 all offer free versions of ZFS for the Intel platform.

Q: When is the Gold Edition going to be available?

We are estimating spring 2012

Q: When is the Platinum Edition going to be available?

We are estimating spring 2012

Q: When is the Developer Edition going to be available?

We are estimating spring 2012

Q: Does ZEVO Developer Edition also have a GUI?

Yes, it has limited GUI support but many operations will require using the Command Line.
